Solemnly Affirm

Tonight at 6p I'll be reciting some special words that are in the Constitution of North Carolina. Article 6, Section 7 reads:
Before entering upon the duties of an office, a person elected or appointed to the office shall take and subscribe the following oath:
"I, __, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and maintain the Constitution and laws of the United States, and the Constitution and laws of North Carolina not inconsistent therewith, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of my office as __, so help me God."
Quakers don't swear oaths because to do so implies a lower standard of integrity at other times, so I'll follow that long tradition and "solemnly affirm" tonight.
It’s an honor to be a part of the government of Carrboro, a town that overwhelmingly voted for a platform with four pillars: Transportation Equity, Better Housing, Climate Action, and Anti-Racist Learning and Practice. I’m raising my two kids here, and in my family we’ve made a commitment to jointly grow Joy, Peace, and Justice in our community. I’m ready to get to work. My community, my work.
